I have set up pinging on my WordPress sites via a plugin called MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer, but have never done any split testing to verify its effectiveness.

Pinging your site can help, you should do it every time you update your site.

I used to ping my site every time I published a post but it didn't get them indexed. I don't ping my site anymore, "Fetch as Google" tool is thousand times better than pinging.

I have do fetch as google as well, probably not as much I should though
