I have never had the opportunity to use them but what are your thoughts on the free control panels for hosting? The 2 that come to my mind are Zpanel and Kloxo cp. I have read some decent things about Zpanel, but also read there are a lot of security issues as well.
You're correct about Zpanel - it's been rooted many times and it seems like the developers either can't fix it, or just don't care. I'd high recommend against it.
Kloxo is stuck on php 5.2 and hasn't had any updates. zPanel is probably the most supported and "best" open source control panel at the moment. There is Kloxo MR - which is a fork of Kloxo that looks interesting.
Will have to check out the Kloxo MR.

Even still, major security issues with it. It's been rooted countless times & is almost as bad as Zamfoo. I wouldn't recommend using it at all on anything that has internet access.
I was reading that it has major security breaches also. Not worth the risk.
best cpanel alternate is zpanel... cpanel is costly compared to zpanel
I heard that Zpanel isn't secure. Do you use it at all?
I loved Zpanel and used it for a bit until I heard about the security issues. Abandoned it then.
I have heard the same, but still interested in trying it out though.
I will throw and old name out and I am not sure if they are still around but The Hosting Tool (https://thehostingtool.com/) used to be decent.
I am planning to get a VPS. But stuck on a decent free CP. Suggest one please..
What OS are you going to use?
