Web Hosting Chat / SSD or HDD
August 24, 2018, 12:25:24 PM
Quote from: "rn-bryan, post: 4482, member: 152"I really don't see tape drives being used except in special case scenarios, obsolete.

They are in fact used for large long term cold storage as I mentioned.

Web Hosting Chat / SSD or HDD

Quote from: "rn-bryan, post: 4477, member: 152"Platter / Mechanical hard drives are definitely going to become obsolete! Same as the tape drives.

Actually Tape drives are here to stay for their insanity cheap per GB pricing of long term cold storage. Plus since they don't spin up 24/7 they are probably the last to fail as well. So unless SSDs beat them at both departments, I don't think they are hitting the fans just yet.

Any game service providers or VPS providers who willing to fulfill either of these requirements?

Custom game hosting deployed in 24 hours or less of stating the open source game OR managed TcAdmin VPS including best efforts support using this panel

I am willing to shell out no more than $20/month for the former and for the latter I would be willing to go higher (depending if you include license and etc).

I would also need in either case for the game/host node good single threading performance and RAID protected SSDs to boot.

If anyone think they can meet these requirements please do feel free to drop below.

Safety and Security / Mozilla Firefox update scam.
February 01, 2018, 06:46:52 AM
Quote from: "spidy, post: 4194, member: 268"20 minutes seems too long, I would suspect it is loaded with bloatware. A good free program to clean it up and speed it up is Ccleaner from Piriform .

Actually the tech who provided me the system since it was a special order did clean it somewhat but it is true that Lenovo isn't the "best known" brand for doing questionable things.

Either way I am glad that old system still have usable life left now that the disk was cleaned enough of whatever was the cause. Plus to boot I don't need to shell out ~$400/license just to see and use my computers. Given that most Ubuntu (and certain other Linux flavors) ships with accessibly features. :)

Safety and Security / Mozilla Firefox update scam.
January 31, 2018, 11:24:24 AM
Quote from: "spidy, post: 4189, member: 268"Yes the Linux/Ubuntu OS are very good and the price (free) is excellent!

Indeed! Buying my old Window 7 system some time after it took 20 minutes for it and ZoomText to boot up fully. But after replacing with Linux it only takes about a minute or two at most.

Even though I am now on the new system (I gave my brother the old one) that SSD should keep on kicking for 10 years. :)

this is partly why I use Linux, as how it handle updates I never has to worry about such scams.

While it still not "bulletproof" as long as you don't download everything you see, open up suspicious emails without flagging it as "spam", and etc a Linux system will likely be able to keep itself from becoming "infested".

General Chat / Air Purifier Right for the Situation?
January 27, 2018, 08:34:39 PM
Quote from: "spidy, post: 4179, member: 268"It may be worth while to ask someone who deals in air purifiers and see what they recommend.

Interesting... I don't see why I can't ask a few air purifier dealers questions about them and then see where that gets me.

Quote from: "Allan, post: 4180, member: 1"I do think that getting one is a smart choice, but as @spidy stated talk to someone that knows a little more about them.

Thank you I agree at this point that it worth talking to them at least.
