I tend to agree with @Travels , hosting is the lowest I have ever seen. Most hosting services are waiting for it to go up.

Hosting is already at their minimum with shared hosting prices with only a few pennies. Cheaper than that will get free hosting for you.

I am actually hoping that the industry sees a rise in pricing, right now it's hard to make a profit on only shared plans because they are so cheap.

Hosting would definitely get cheaper. The prices of hardware right now compared to a few years ago are really worth the money you spend for it. Right now I'm on DigitalOcean. For the money I pay them for the servers I have I would have only bought a small shared hosting plan if I were to buy hosting a few years back. It's getting cheaper and cheaper that there's literally no reason not to have a website anymore.

If they go any lower, people who run their own hardware will find it very hard to survive

If the costs go too low the customers may suffer as the hosts may not be able to afford to invest in newer or better equipment.

A business needs to make a reasonable amount of profit to remain viable.

With the recent, and upcoming, wage increases, in the USA, I am sure we are going to see a trend away from the ultra low cost unlimited hosting providers.

I was thinking the same thing, just don't know how long that will take.

I think rn-bryan could be correct. Any business to be able to survive needs a reasonable cash flow and if some hosts do not run with a sensible margin they will fold.

One way to acquire cheaper hosting, as a consumer, is to organize a group of your peers who all use hosting services, and purchase a reseller hosting account, rather than multiple shared hosting accounts. This would allow you to minimize your total and average cost for hosting plans.

That is a good idea if you have contact with others who would join in.

A group of friends purchasing a reseller account together would have to run the gambit of the one holding the master password doing nefarious things or if they share the master password...

It's happened in the past... to even large companies, registerfly as an example where the owner of the company ran off with everyone's domains...

I suppose anything is a risk when you put the data in a spot other than in your own home.

:)

Just have to trust your friends I suppose.

I also am looking for pricing to go up as it's already ridiculously low right now. Hardware prices may be going down, but support staff expenses are quite expensive.

I would imagine it could be hard to compete on price,  especially if a country decided to offer very low reliable services.  In business some countries already subsidize income producing (foreign currency) businesses.

If a country like China decided to go into this full bore it would be very hard to compete with it.

This is so true, you have to sell 4x's the hosting to help make up the difference in pricing.

The costs of hosting "if nothing goes wrong" is cheap.

But customers who "make things go wrong" need to pay for support.

A £1.99 hosting package almost implies "no support".

Of course, they get support, so you need to ensure everything is running well and documented,

Indeed I found at "data center pricing" you need to spend about 1.5x to 3x than a "unmanaged" piece of hardware to get to fully managed gears and to include at least an additional off site location from a 3rd party.

Time that with additional features like auto installer, extra support, and so on I honestly believe that customers need to pay up for a quality solution. Rather than expecting the world for a few buck or less.

There lies the problem, customers are always looking for lowest amount out of pocket.

Actually I would "blame" the "ball game" more than the customers. Because while there are cheap stakes out there the real "problem" that this industry is hitting the fans at offering realistically priced services.

For example while a customer may only pay a buck for the "world", when his/her HVAC system hit the fans chances are he/she won't have problems paying the $4,000+ for a new unit and such. Why you ask? Because they know and understand that there no such thing as a "$1 HVAC system".

It would seem so. The prices will drop because of competition,  however it can only drop so far before it becomes unprofitable and then they will close down or increase their charges.

Or things will start hitting the fans, for example substandard support, hardware, networking, software, and in some cases even less than pretty things like not respecting their vendors, suppliers, and/or etc to sustain their unrealistic pricing.
